How to migrate existing Windows installations to VirtualBox. Disclaimer: Migration of Windows guests from a physical host into a VirtualBox VM is not supported. These instructions are provided as-is in the hope that they are helpful. Windows installations, unlike Linux, cannot easily be moved from one hardware to another. Create a New VM from within VirtualBox Manager and choose 'Use an existing virtual disk file' which points to your newly created VDI file. After it is created open Settings for the VM. Under System Motherboard make sure only Hard Disk and Optical is selected, Optical is at the top of the boot order and 'Enable EFI (special OSes only)' is ticked. Description

Acronis True Image Echo has the capability to convert a disk/partition backup images (.tib) to a virtual disk file (.vmdk, .vhd, .hdd). You will then be able to add the disk to a virtual machine of compatible type ( virtual machine (Desktop or ESX format), MS virtual machine or Parallels virtual machine).

Here is the list of steps, which are performed by to convert a *.tib archive to a virtual disk:

  1. The *.tib backup archive and the destination format of virtual disk are selected by user.
  2. The structure of the corresponding destination virtual disk (.vmdk, .vhd, .hdd) is initialized.
  3. Acronis True Image Echo checks if there is a Windows operating system on one of the partitions in the .tib archive
    • If there is, then the virtual device driver set for the corresponding virtual machine type is injected (using the technology similar to Acronis Universal Restore)
    • If there is not, then the image is left as is
  4. Acronis True Image Echo fills the initialized virtual disk structure with data from the archive.
  5. Acronis True Image Echo finalizes and closes the virtual disk, writes checksums.

All the required virtual device drivers are shipped within the Acronis True Image Echo product itself.
